Wall Street to Main Street: News, Views and Commentary: May 4, 2006

Author: Louis Victor

Its Thursday May 4, 2006, and the verdict is in, the only person convicted in the 911 attacks, Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life in prison. He will be transported to a maximum-security facility in Colorado where he will be prevented from any contact with the outside world. So there are a lot of mixed feelings about the verdict.

Political Front

China puffed out its chest and went against the rules of the Vatican as they appointed two Bishops without the consent of the Pope.

As we mentioned yesterday in regards to the bird flu plan, a Federal Pandemic Plan has been unveiled and puts the burden on individuals and businesses and less on the government.

An Iran resolution was sent to the United Nations Security Council but there is a slight problem both Russia and China adamantly oppose it, this could cause tensions to rise and oil prices to jump up in the coming days.

Movers and Shakers

Some major movers in yesterdays trading session included TRW Automotive Holdings (NYSE: TRW) which traded up $3.13 to close at $26.50, Brinks Co (NYSE: BCO) which traded up $5.43 to close at $ 59.36, Guess, Inc (NYSE: GES) which traded up $3.38 to close at $44.67, Advanced Digital Information (NASDAQ: ADIC) which traded up $3.60 to close at $11.87, Phazar Corp (NASDAQ: ANTP) which traded up $2.89 to close at $11.82, SPSS, Inc (NASDAQ: SPSS) which traded up $4.90 to close at $38.75, and Kforce (NASDAQ: KFRC) which traded up $1.76 to close at $15.76.

Tid Bits

Exxon (NYSE: XOM) chief Rex Tillerson told it like it is on national television, stating that Exxons main goal is to make money for the company and its shareholders, basically dodging all the other issues that have arisen as of late. Im surprised that he wasnt on David Letterman instead of speaking with Matt Lauer on NBC.

It looks like Northwest Airlines have convinced their pilots to approve a new labor contract that would cut cost of the failing airline by $358 million and avoid a potential strike that would ground the airline indefinitely.

In a unique turn of events, the brokerage powerhouse Lehman Brothers (NYSE: LEH) have asked some of their analyst to shelf the writing of research reports and take their stock picks directly to select clients of theirs. This could make for a n interesting situation and may spark a trend in the industry.

Bausch & Lomb (NYSE: BOL) is under the coals once again as many new cases have arisen against their products. This could be devastating to the company and it will reflect in lower trading prices.

Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) is in a put up or shut up position, they need to either complete the Aldelphia deal or walk away to give some direction to the company. The continued delay could begin to be more weight on the stock price.

It looks like the Nasdaq (NASDAQ: NDAQ) is determined to make a deal to merge with the London Stock Exchange as they increase their stake in the LSE to almost 19%. This could be very interesting is the NYSE Group (NYSE: NYX) looks to strike a deal with the Nasdaq for the prime LSE real estate.

FURIOUS FIVE

This is the fourth of our Furious Five companies that we see excelling in their industry in 2006. The fourth addition to this weeks Furious Five is Crocs, Inc (NASDAQ: CROX) it trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol CROX.

We cannot stress enough that investors need to do their due diligence, call the companies, get the information, consult with your investment advisor and if you do not have one consider getting one. Put the same time into investigating these companies as you do when you go to purchase a new television, its only for your protection. When it comes to thinly traded securities stagger your orders or put a limit order in to avoid a run up.
