Ultrasound Vocational Schools

Author: Michael Bustamante

Medical Ultrasound Vocational Schools, or Sonography schools, provide studies for certification and associate degrees in ultrasound technology.

Ultrasound technology is superior to x-ray for viewing muscles and other soft tissue, such as heart and vein tissue and fetuses in the womb. However, ultrasound machines take some specialized skills to properly operate.

Ultrasonography uses sound waves to generate images for assessment, and is generally associated with ultrasound imaging during pregnancy. However, ultrasound or ultrasonography imaging includes several procedures that aid in diagnosing ailments, and is applied to applications in the diagnosis and treatment of several medical conditions.

In addition to working directly with patients, diagnostic ultrasound or sonography technicians may be required to keep patient records and to adjust and maintain equipment. Ultrasound technicians may also prepare work schedules, evaluate equipment purchases, or manage an ultrasound or diagnostic imaging department. Earning a diploma or associate degree in ultrasound technology through vocational school studies should allow for first-hand laboratory experience. Certification or an associate degree in ultrasound technology from and accredited vocational school will prepare the student for entry-level positions.

Job opportunities are favorable in this field. Most ultrasound technicians are employed by hospitals, while others work in physician's offices or in medical and diagnostic laboratories.
