Slipcover - Match Your Decor

Author: Oddvar Nilsen

A slipcover is a loose cover that is fitted to protective a piece of upholstered furniture. Slipcovers are made of cloth, cotton usually and are referred to as clothing for your furniture. Anyway you look at it, a slipcover is draped over your couch or chair in hopes to keep the original condition of the couch or to enhance the condition of the couch or chair.

Slipcovers are not just for protection, but they are also used to improve the look of the furniture. Many times people will purchase secondhand furniture or just has worn out furniture that can be quite embarrassing, so they try to spruce things up by making or buying slipcovers. They can be tailored to fit the furniture perfectly or they could just hand loosely on the furniture. Today people even purchase furniture for the fact of using slipcovers. By purchasing a plain couch or chair it will save you tons of money and then by simply adding a slipcover you can make the furniture match your dcor.

Back in the day, way before air conditioning, it was common to use slipcovers. The reason for this was because upholstered furniture was hot and the fabric would get dirty easily from the sweat and oils of all the guests that sat on the couch. Back then slipcovers was mostly those ghastly plastic or vinyl slipcovers that either stuck to your legs when you got up or made a noise when you sat down.

Practically everyones grandmother or mother had the dreaded plastic slipcovers, but that was the style back then. They were cheap to make and mass-produced all over the United States. Then again, so was the furniture. When furniture was able to be mass-produced, the use of slipcovers declined. No one cared about his or her furniture anymore because it could easily be replaced. However, today slipcovers are still in use.

Today, slipcovers are just as stylish, but dont involve any sticking or noise when you leave or return to your chair. Slipcovers today are used to give the room a make over or give the furniture a make over. When your couch is so old that the pattern is fading out, thats when its time for a slipcover. Because interior design has become an interest to the public, slipcovers are coming back. By simply having a loose fitting slipcover youre adding some shabby chic to your style. By having a fitted slipcover, you are giving your furniture a true make over and adding some class to the room.

Slipcovers can be purchased in the same area as the linens and the style mostly is to have a fitted look. If you purchase a slipcover now you have to work for style. Many of the slipcovers are made small so that you have a clean and crisp fit. They also require some tugging and pulling to place on the furniture.
