Academic Control

Author: Lance Winslow

Does academia have too much control over our society, some think it does. In fact most of the research, which is used in public policy indeed comes from University studies, research and reports. These studies are done via grants and research monies to determine public policy in all aspect of the American endeavor.

One could say that having the power behind such reports and doing elective reports and holding them out to politicians and decision makers is a huge bonus for these Universities. But with such power will come abuse and the more power we give academia to help us determine policy the more corruption we can expect; considering of course that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Should we be willing to turn over control to academia? How much credence should we give to the literature, reports and research they produce? If we know Universities govern and purport liberal viewpoints as a norm then we must realize that any and all academic reports will favor that side of the politic, however is that really serving the will of the people?

One could argue both sides of that debate, yet that is not my point here today, sure it is a point of contention indeed. But let us take another aspect of this conversation and that is what happens when academia picks our leaders and direction of our nation and turns our country in to socialist state? Well? Perhaps you might take a look at what is going on today in politics and answer that question for yourself? Consider this in 2006.
