Relocation Tips - Do It Yourself Or Use A Professional Mover?

Author: Steadman Issenburg

Having to relocate from where you are to another area calls for many major decisions that have to be made. And since relocating involves most or all of your earthly possessions, you want to be sure that you make the best decisions as you go. One of the first decisions that you will be faced with is whether to handle the move yourself or hire a professional mover instead.

Of course, there are advantages to both moving methods. The most obvious advantage for doing it yourself is that you can usually save quite a better money if you do, while the greatest advantage of having a professional mover handle it for you is being able to take advantage of their experience while saving all the physical wear and tear associated with doing it yourself. But let's look closer at both options to see what else we can learn.

If you decide to do it yourself, it's true that you can most likely save money, sometimes quite a bit by doing it this way. However, quite often consumers overlook some of the costs that are associated with moving themselves. Be sure to add up all of the expenses that will be involved including the cost of the rental truck, gasoline, any hotel bills if the trip is long-distance, moving insurance, and so forth.

Now also add in your time to both load the rental truck on one end of the journey, and then to unload it at the other end as well. Now consider how much that time would be worth to you if you were working instead of moving. Sometimes, by taking into consideration all of these factors it becomes apparent that doing it yourself does not save quite as much money as you had originally thought.

On the other hand, a professional mover can help make your relocation goes so much smoother, but they also have all of your possessions under their control. So that means there is a need to select a professional mover that has an excellent reputation in the industry in order to be assured of being treated fairly.

One good place. to start is to ask your neighbors and friends about any experiences they have had with moving companies. But don't stop there. Also check with the local Better Business Bureau to see what moving companies have the best reputation there. When you start to get a short list of the most reputable moving companies to choose from, make sure that they all are insured enough both to cover any damages to your possessions and to also cover their employees if they are injured while on the job.

Be aware that if you call a national van lines company, they will often use a local mover to get the job done. So find out who they intend to use and then check out the reputation on that local company as well.

By taking into consideration all the points listed above, it should help you be able to make a wise and informed decision on whether you should move yourself or hire a professional mover relocate you instead.
