What You Focus on is What You See

Author: Justin Herald

What you see is what you get!

I was recently asked if I am a half full or half empty type of person with regards to the glass example. My reply was very short, sharp and to the point. I replied, I just see the glass. It is up to me to either fill it or empty it. Whilst this may sound simplistic, you would be surprised to see how many people actually let their experiences, good or bad, affect their future direction. Let me explain this point by telling you a story.

A Chinese farmer was ploughing the villages fields. As the village only had one horse, it was his job in life to ensure that the horse was looked after as if anything happened to it, the village would be left without its hardest worker.

One day as he was tending the field, the horse broke free and disappeared into the mountains. He tried to find it with no luck. He returned to the village and told them all what happened. As he finished telling them what had happened someone said thats bad luck! As quick as the comment was given, he gave a reply bad luck, good luck, who knows?

The village just went on with their day as there was really noting that could be done about it.

The following day whilst the entire village were out tending the field the horse returned, but with it came back 2 smaller horses in tow. Now the village had three horses that would be of great value to them. As the villagers saw this, someone said to the farmer Now thats good luck! the farmer replied, Good luck, bad luck, who knows? And they all went back to work.

The following week whilst the farmer was tending the field with his son, one of the new horses reared up in a panic after being frightened by something and kicked its back legs. The son was standing very close to the horse and as a result, he felt the impact of that horses force. So much so that it broke his leg.

The villagers came running to see what the fuss was all about, and upon seeing the son of the farmer in a heap on the ground with a broken leg, one of them spoke saying now thats bad luck. Once again the farmer shot back, bad luck, good luck, who knows?

About three weeks later whilst the village was going about their business, the army arrived to conscript all of the younger men of the village. When they came to the house of the farmer, they realised that he could not go with them due to his broken leg, so he was spared. When the army had left his neighbour said to him that was good luck! once again he replied good luck, bad luck, who knows?

So what am I trying to tell you, you might ask? Simple really; just because something may not go the way that you had planned, or something bad might happen to you, you never know what good can come out of it. Life will hand us all some curly situations. If we just give up, throw the towel in and sulk for the rest of our lives, then nothing will ever change. We all need to get up and get back on track.

Good things will happen to us as well as bad things. The true measure of someone is how they handle not only the bad times but also the good. If you are in a place in your life right now that is far from pleasant. They way that you look at your situation will be a direct indication as to how long it will take you to get out of it.
