The Laws of Motivation

Author: Jeff Herring

The Law of Taste - Motivation comes from wanting something so badly "you can taste it."

The Law of a Way - Related to the law of taste, when you want something this much, you can always find a way. In the words of Tony Robbins, theres always a way if you are committed.

The Law of Leverage - Here are some questions to give you enough leverage on your self to get motivated: If I keep on going the way I am going, what will my life be like 6 months from now? In a year? In three years? In five years? Like the Ghost of Christmas Future in A Christmas Carol, getting a glimpse of the future without change can be all the motivation that is needed.

The Law of Music - Music motivates. Just about everyone has a song or piece of music that inspires them to new heights. Surround yourself with music that motivates you.

The Law of State - Being motivated is simply a state of mind and nothing more. Reflect on the times in your life when you were the most motivated. Notice what you were thinking, how you carried yourself, what you focused on, what you spent your time doing. To get into a motivated state, simply take these factors and apply them in your life right now.

The Law of Trying - The three words used most often by the unmotivated are Well, I tried. Do a little experiment with me. Try to pick up the newspaper in which you are reading this column. Did you pick it up? You either picked it up or you didnt. Either one is an outcome, a result. Trying in not an outcome or result, its an excuse. In the words of the Yoda character from Star Wars, Do or not do. There is no try. And, I would add, no motivation in trying.

The Law of Doing - Dare to do! Whats daring about doing? Everything! Most people just think, wish, dream or talk about doing. Its the rare person who dares to do. Eric Hoffer is quoted as saying, In times of change, learners inherit the earth. While that may be true, Ill go a step further and say, In times of change, and at any other time, doers inherit the earth.

The Law of Momentum - Motivation & momentum follow doing. Once you begin doing, momentum begins to build, & things that up until now seemed insurmountable, become simply the next small challenge, that when accomplished, builds even more momentum.

The Law of A Kick in the Pants - We all need a kick in the pants from time to time. The enemies of motivation - laziness, distraction, feeling overwhelmed, etc. - attack each one of us. A good swift kick, whether from a friend, a colleague, a boss, a family member, or best of all, ourselves, can get us back in the game.

The Law of Desperation - Some folks are only motivated by a sense of desperation. From the school kid who waits to the night before to start a project to the husband who doesnt get it until his wife is walking out the door, some folks seem to have to be desperate to get going. While it may work for some people, it doesnt appear to be a very successful way to live.

The Law of Inspiration - A more empowering source of motivation is inspiration. This is because with inspiration the motivation comes from inside us. Desperation usually comes from an outside source, and becomes a have to. Inspiration is a choice we make, and is therefore a want to, or better yet, a get to.

The Law of Design - Have you ever considered what it might be like to design a life? Most of us get so caught up in making a living that we never think about designing a life. So consider this question: What would motivate you more, making a living or designing a life?

The Law of a Dream - Billy Joel once sang, everybody has a dream. Whats yours? Most people remain unmotivated because they are not pursuing a big enough dream, or no dream at all. If you have a big and compelling enough dream, the motivation will come naturally.

The Law of Dickens - If I keep on going the way I am going, what will my life be like 6 months from now? In a year? 3 years? 5 years? Like the Ghost of Christmas Future in A Christmas Carol, getting a glimpse of the future without change is all the motivation that is needed.
