Affiliate Programs - Are They For You?

Author: Michael Russell

You have seen all the ads on the internet about making money working from home and you are excited to get started. These ads really pull you in, shouting out to you "make $5,000.00 per week doing nothing" or "work from home in your underwear!". Who wouldn't be gung-ho about all the supposed opportunities out there? We are of course talking about Affiliate Programs.

Affiliate programs are one of the many ways to earn money on the internet. Affiliate Programs are essentially a marketing strategy by a single company or group of companies. In this method of selling, an individual can sign up to be an affiliate of a company. This is kind of like a web salesperson on commission. They are given an affiliate id link and sometimes a website, which allows the company to track their sales. When a buyer sees the affiliate website or the affiliates special company link and clicks on it, the affiliate gets credit for the sale. The compensation for the affiliate of the company, is usually a set dollar amount or a percentage of what the customer buys. For instance, a person may sign up to be an affiliate for Company XYZ which sells stuffed animals. In this case, he/she may get an affiliate website. When a potential customer visits the website for this affiliate and buys $100.00 worth of teddy bears, Company XYZ pays them a 10% commission off of this sale. The person has made $10.00! That sounds pretty great, huh?

As with anything in life, things are not always so cut and dried. If it was, everyone would want to work for an affiliate program because it would be the easiest money they have ever made. The problem with being this "web salesperson" is that you have to market the company that you are an affiliate of. This is essentially why companies love having affiliates. By having someone else market their company, they save a lot of money on advertising. This is a detriment to the affiliate because to get customers, you need to generate web traffic to your affiliate id, website and/or the company website.

How do you generate traffic so that you can make your money you ask? Well by employing various marketing techniques that will often cost you money out of your own pocket. Most affiliates usually try to accomplish their marketing through free means, such as Yahoo classifieds, Postaroo, Craig's list and sometimes MySpace. The problem with these free advertising sites is that because they are free, everyone has the same idea and there may be many of the same products or affiliates doing the same thing. This brings about a great deal of competition and the possibility of your advertisement to your link becoming unnoticed. The next option is to pay for a service to get your affiliate link or website out there. This may be a company who for a one-time or monthly price will get your website and link submitted to all the major search engines. Pay per click is sort of the same thing except you pay a certain amount when a person clicks on your link that is advertised on a website. These strategies may or may not work. It will take a lot of research to find a good search engine submission company or pay per click company that is affordable and worth its weight.

Affiliate programs are not for everyone due to the effort and financial undertaking that may be involved. Some people may have a knack for it and do quite well while others may have no results at all. With any type of work from home opportunity it is best to not jump in head first but to do a lot of fact finding about the different affiliate companies and marketing strategies that can be used. Only then can you decide if being an affiliate is the right thing for you.
